sarah starkweather . teaching experience

My teaching interests are, broadly speaking, in socio-cultural and political aspects of human geography. I have designed and taught courses on globalization, migration and citizenship; interdisciplinary urban and regional studies; gender and feminist geographies; and immigration, ethnicity and race in the United States.

I value interdisciplinary approaches to geographic problems, and pedagogies that engage students as producers and sharers of knowledge. For example, in previous courses, I have used novels, films and popular music to illuminate the role of 'the urban' in American life; directed service learning projects designed to help students understand the connections between ecological, political, social and economic systems in the Seattle region; and facilitated students' creation of a well-received online guide to U.S. immigration legislation (now hosted by the University of Washington-Bothell Library here).
